What does registration mean?
All owners will have a City License Certificate and annual Rabies Certificate
All animals will be tagged - either wearing a collar with a City Tag or Micro-chipped
Are there any exemptions?
Yes. No penalty charge will be assessed if a person delivers an injured or ill animal to a licensed Vet for treatment so long as the animal is then registered
How much does registration cost?
$8 annually for spayed or neutered animals
$16 annually for all others
Free of Charge for animals used as Guide Animals for the Deaf or Blind

Why is registration mandatory for all?
Encourages responsible pet ownership
Accurately track animal population in the City of Alexandria
Encourages spaying/neutering
Aids in the return of lost pets
Identifies owners of at-large or dangerous animals
Identifies and discourages illegal breeding farms
What are the penalties for failure to register?
Misdemeanor
Fines up to $500, Imprisonment of up to sixty (60) days, or both
*If a dog is determined by the City of Alexandria to be vicious, based on behavior, not breed, then there are insurance and additional registration requirements
